When I first arrived in China to pursue my Master’s degree at Yanshan University, I believed learning Chinese meant memorizing vocabulary, practicing grammar, and passing language examinations. Like many international students, I thought the classroom would be the center of my language-learning journey. However, it did not take long to realize that the most valuable lessons in Chinese were waiting outside the classroom— in everyday conversations, shared experiences, and the vibrant campus life that makes Yanshan University an inspiring place to study.

Language is much more than words. I t reflects a country’s culture, values, traditions, and way of thinking. Every greeting, every conversation, and every interaction became an opportunity to understand China more deeply. At Yanshan University, I discovered that learning Chinese is not simply an academic subject; it is a bridge that connects people from different cultures and creates friendships that transcend national boundaries.

Every Day Is a Language Lesson

My learning journey begins long before entering a classroom. Ordering breakfast at the campus cafeteria, asking for directions, shopping at nearby stores, or chatting with

classmates all require using Chinese in real-life situations.These everyday experiences gradually transformed unfamiliar phrases into natural conversations.

Unlike language exercises found in textbooks, real conversations teach confidence. Sometimes I make mistakes, and sometimes I search for the right words, but every interaction becomes an opportunity to improve. The patience and kindness shown by Chinese teachers, classmates, and local residents have made this journey both enjoyable and rewarding.

Learning Through Friendship

One of the greatest advantages of studying at Yanshan University is its welcoming international environment. Students from China and around the world study, participate in activities, and solve academic challenges together. These friendships create an ideal environment for language immersion.

Conversations with Chinese classmates extend far beyond academic discussions. We exchange ideas about our cultures, celebrate festivals together, discuss our future careers, and even teach each other expressions that cannot be found in dictionaries. Through these friendships, I have learned that communication is built on respect, curiosity, and genuine human connection.

Discovering Chinese Culture Through Language

Every language carries the history of its people, and Chinese is no exception. As my understanding of the language has grown, I have also gained a deeper appreciation for Chinese traditions, customs, and social values.

Participating in cultural activities organized by Yanshan University has made learning even more meaningful. Whether celebrating the Spring Festival, experiencing traditional calligraphy, enjoying Chinese cuisine, or visiting historical sites in Hebei Province, each experience has helped transform classroom knowledge into lasting memories.

These activities remind international students that education is not limited to lectures— it also happens through cultural experiences that encourage openness, respect, and lifelong learning.

A University That Encourages Global Understanding

Yanshan University provides far more than academic education. I t creates opportunities for international students to become active participants in Chinese society while preserving their own cultural identities.

The university regularly organizes cultural exchange programs, academic seminars, student competitions, volunteer activities, and community events that encourage communication between Chinese and international students. These experiences help students build confidence, improve language skills, and develop the intercultural competence required in today’s interconnected world.

For many international students, these opportunities become some of the most valuable lessons of their university experience.

Beyond Words: Building Confidence and Character

As a student in the School of Economics and Management, I have discovered that language learning also strengthens professional skills. Communicating in Chinese has improved my confidence in presentations, teamwork, networking, and cross-cultural communication.

These experiences are particularly valuable in today’s global business environment, where employers increasingly seek graduates who can work across cultures and communicate effectively with international partners.

Learning Chinese has therefore become more than an academic achievement— it has become an investment in my future career and personal growth.

Hebei: AClassroom Beyond Campus

Studying in Qinhuangdao has also introduced me to the rich history and development

of Hebei Province. Visits  to local attractions, interactions with residents, and participation in community activities have expanded my understanding of China’s remarkable progress while allowing me to practice Chinese in authentic settings.

Every journey beyond the university campus becomes another chapter in language learning. Whether exploring local markets, traveling by train, or visiting cultural landmarks, each experience contributes to a deeper appreciation of Chinese society.

Lessons That Will Last a Lifetime

When I first arrived at Yanshan University, I expected to earn a degree and improve my academic knowledge. Instead, I found an experience that has reshaped the way I communicate, think, and understand the world.

Learning Chinese beyond the classroom has taught me resilience when conversations become challenging, humility when making mistakes, and confidence when progress becomes visible. More importantly, it has shown me that language is ultimately about building relationships and understanding people.

Yanshan University has provided the ideal environment for this journey by combining academic excellence with cultural immersion, international friendship, and meaningful opportunities for personal growth. It is a place where education extends far beyond lecture halls, preparing students not only for successful careers but also for meaningful lives in an increasingly connected world.

As I continue my academic journey in China, I realize that every new conversation is another lesson, every friendship is another chapter, and every day at Yanshan University is another step toward becoming a more capable global citizen. Sometimes the most important classroom has no walls at all.
